Serving sizes

This week in Home ec we have been learning about serving sizes. It is important to get the number of servings and the size of servings right for your body each day to stay healthy.

This shows my learning because i have made a post from my understanding of servings.

I am wondering: how did people come up with this guide line.

here is the amount of servings you should have in a day for each food. Things like age, gender and activity level change how much food you need to eat a day. If you are watching your weight, cut back of some portions.

For bread/ cereals the serving size is about 1 cup. This equates to 1 cup of pasta ect or a piece of bread. Potatoes, kumara and pumpkin count as a carbohydrate.

We need 1-2 servings of meat a day. A serving equates to an amount which is the size of the plan of your hand.

We need 1-3 servings of dairy a day and a serving equates to one cup of milk roughly.

You can have 2 servings of fruit a day. A serving is one medium piece of fruit or two small ones (mandirin ect). We can only have about 2 because of the sugar in fruit.

We can have 3+plus servings of veges. We can eat as much carrots, peas ect as we want.

Fat, sugar and salt. We are allowed 0-1 servings of really fatty foods, really sugary foods of food high in sodium.

How this relates to my daily intake ( average)
I eat a balanced diet with the right amount of everything.

bread:6
veges:3
fruit:2
meat: none - 1
dairy: 1
water: 1.5 litres

extras: 1

Dinner plate

what our dinner plate should consist of:1/2 veges, 1/4 meat/ alternatives, 1/4 carbs (potaoes/pasta ect)
our example: meat ( i think its pork), potatoes, carrots, peas. we made a dinner model with play doh

What I have learnt over the term:
I have learnt about lactose intolerance and other dietary requirements, servings, what water does to us, healthy food swaps, how to cook nutritious food and how to work in a team.

Collage time

This week in art we are making collages featuring our Maori bird, this will go towards a magazine to be sold at the market day.  I am very proud of my work. Next time I would colour the bird a little brighter so your eyes are drawn to it.

We are learning to use leading lines and focal points to get the viewers attention.

In this picture i have created a collage and used leading lines to draw the eye to my bird. This form of art is based on Michael Mew's work.

writing makes you strong (api taylor)

Last Wednesday, an amazing poet came into our school. His name is Api Taylor and he preformed for us and held a work shop. I really enjoyed having him and he is an amazing poet.

He uses music as well as his powerful words to send us a message. He preformed many poems for us about people he has met and what he has learnt from travelling the world. His main phrase is ' writing makes you strong' which shows us how much words have an effect on us. It also shows that using your words to express yourself can really help you.

I cant decide what part of the visit i enjoyed most because it all was amazing. From this workshop I have learnt that you don't need to think when you write, just put down things that pop into your head.

work sample.
For the workshop we came up with some word and had to make a poem from them. Here is mine.

Water flows through a river like smiles through humanity. The sun and moon look down onn us as if we are a pebble on the land, a rain drop in a thunder storm. We all must step out of our minds and listen to the little things in life. Only then shall we find peace.

have your cake and eat it too (or not)

I am working on a science research topic about nutrition. You know what came to my mind when I think nutrition; eating an entire cake.Yep, so I am going to be researching what will happen to your body and what it the nutritional value of three different cakes.

So what happens if you eat too much sugar?

The things that eating too much sugar are...
- weight gain ( really obvious)
-increased risk of heart disease
- increase the risk of acne
-increased risk of diabetes
-increased risk of cancer
-ageing process made quicker.

What it does to your brain
-sugar releases a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is a feel good hormone. Dopamine is released, gives you a good feeling and is highly addictive. That's why we  are constantly craving sugar ( or is it just me, anyone?) . After the high then comes a down feeling. This high and low cycle can lead to depression.

Pancreas

When you eat, your pancreas pumps out insulin. But if you’re eating way too much sugar and your body stops responding properly to insulin, your pancreas starts pumping out even more insulin. Eventually, your overworked pancreas will break down and your blood sugar levels will rise, setting you up for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. (Yay!)

Heart
When you eat excess sugar, the extra insulin in your bloodstream can affect your arteries, part of your body’s circulatory system. This causes the walls of blood vessels to grow fast and creates complications .

How much sugar does it take to kill you (...)?

for a 180 pound (81 kg) male it would take 5.4 (2.5 kg) pounds of sugar to kill you. That is equal to about 1.5 of the vanilla birthday cakes. (yum?)
