Screen printing (textiles)

Through out this semester we will be creating our own printed fabric. we are learning different techniques to use in our end product. This week we have been learning how to screen print.

We are learning: to create a printed fabric which represents our culture and identity.
How does this show my learning: I am learning new tecniques to use in my print.
I am wondering: what sparked the idea of screen printing fabric.

Reflection: I think my screen print turned out well. When cutting my stencil, my knife slipped a few times, nothing too noticeable though. The actual printing went well. I used a little too much paint but managed to recycle it. over all I think screen printing worked well. Im not entirely sure if I will use it in my end print.

Screen printing is a printing method which uses paint, a mesh screen, a stencil and material. When making a screen print many things can go wrong.
First you have to find and print/draw an image onto some card.
Then you have to carefully cut it out (every knife slip will show).
Next we have to layer the stencil and screen on the fabric.
Dragging the paint using a squeegee has to be done well too. The squeegee needs to be at a 45 degree angle to spread the paint correctly.

Here are the photos of my screen print.

This one is the teacher, Miss Laycock, showing us how to use the squeegee.
This is my stencil once it was fully cut out. Cutting it was a little difficult, the knife slipped a few times.

Here is the end product of my screen print.

similies

Similes
A simile is a statement used to describe something by comparing it to something else.
For example, Mike's been as busy as a bee this week.
When we compare how busy Mike has been to a bee it helps us to imagine just how busy he has been.
Similes use words such as like, as or such to compare the thing being described.
A. Use a word from the box below to complete each sentence.

1. These peaches are as sweet as honey
2. The twins are alike as peas
3. This material is as smooth as silk
4. The thief is no doubt as crafty as a fox
5. After his stay in hospital Mike is now as fit as a   fiddle
6. These friends are as thick as  thieves
7. During the fire he stayed as cool as a   cucumber
8. After it was washed my shirt was as clean as a whistle
9. The new boy is as strong as an ox
10. The postie comes as regular as clockwork
11. After it was run over it was as flat as a pancake
12. The old tree is now as dead as a doornail

B. Choose a word from the below to complete each simile.

1. As warm as  toast
2. As tough as  coal
3. As right as    rain
4. As black as leather
5. As playful as a  kitten
6. As sound as a  bell
7. As graceful as a   swan
8. As good as gold
9. As stubborn as a  mule
10. As slow as a snail
11. As cold as  ice
12. As slippery as an  eel

C. Make up your own similes. Simply compare a person you know or any object to something else that has certain qualities. Remember to use like, as or such.
Simile One : As tall as a giraffe
Simile Two : two sided like a coin

Simile Three : as sharp as a knife

WTE sentences ( sports and recreation)

This term in English we are learning about sentences which will help us with future essays. There are twelve different sentence types, all potentially contributing to a great essay.
We are learning: WTE sentences.
How does this show my learning:
I am wondering

I am writing an essay about why sportsmen ( and women) shouldn't be paid for competing. This topic is what I will base my sentences on.

1. The simple sentence:
Sportsmen shouldn't be paid for a typically recreational sport.

2. The very short sentence:
Paid sport wastes money

3. the power sentence:
Paying athletes to play sports is a waste of citizen's money.

4. Red white and blue:
Paying people to play sports is a waste of time, effort and money.

5. The adverb start.
Unsurprisingly, sport is a big part of peoples lives.

6. Begin with a preposition:
After being injured, players lose their main source of income.

7. The ing start:
Aspiring to be a paid athlete is not the best way to provide others with a service.

8. The -ed start:
Injured players can lose their main source of income in a second.

9. The semicolon: Paying people to play sports doesn't help the player or the people paying to watch them; just wasting both parties time.

10 The em-dash:
sports are a fun activity- loved by many- which have a big impact on some peoples lives.

11. The w start:
why should athletes be paid when they are playing a game.

12. explore the subject:
Injustice, when things are not just or fair, can be used to describe how some sportsmen are paid and how some are not.

Hearts and minds (English scholarship)

Throughout the year I have been working on an English project about psychology. This slideshow is about 'hearts and minds' meaning how our emotions and mental health are connected. The slide show explores happiness, emotional intelligence,  emotional labour and recognising emotions.

I am wondering: Who was the first person to study the correlation between emotions and the mind.

Home Ec Sushi

This Friday in home ec we made sushi. I think our team ( Nadia, Jess, Connor, Jnaya) worked well together. We all had roles to play and we ended up with a great product.
We are learning: In Home Ec we are currently learning about food culture and how food has evolved.
How does this show my learning: We have practised making a dish which now is a favourite in our culture. Japanese cuisine has influenced our food and we are now left with great dishes such as sushi.
I am wondering: how the idea of sushi was discovered.

The first step was to prepare the rice. Each team member was given 3/4 c of seasoned rice to use. We spread the rice out on a plate for rapid cooling.

Next we prepared the vegetables. The capsicum, cucumber, carrot and celery needed to be julienned (cut thin and long). We were also given the option of avocado to add to our sushi. We had two people peeling and washing; and two people cutting the vegetables. This was very efficient and a good way to set out rolls.

The mayo was placed onto a plate for convenience when it comes to adding to the sushi. We were also  given the option of wasabi but none of our team was interested.

When putting the sushi together we start with the rice. Lay out the rice in an even layer, covering all the nori except 2cm at the top end (for keeping together the roll).  We spent a fair while making sure this was as close to perfect as we could get it.

When laying on the vegetables, add them in lines according to the vegetable type. They need to be a few centimetres from the start of the rice.We had two people putting together and rolling the sushi, resulting in more time to get each roll as neat as possible.

To roll the sushi, use the mat and roll over. once you get to the fillings, make sure they are packed in by pushing them in with your fingers. keep rolling using the mat and wet the exposed edge of nori to keep the roll in place. Whilst the sushi was being rolled by two team members whilst the dishes not in use were washed. This was the best way to save time and keep all team members occupied.

Finally, the sushi needed cut. It would have been difficult for the sushi to stay together if it was cut into too many small pieces, so we cut them in half and wrapped them up in grease proof paper.

The sushi turned out really well and our team worked together well.

Nutrition:

In the sushi there was 3/4 cup of rice, meaning it was 1.5 servings of carbohydrates.
There was a small serving of vegetables, maybe not quite a serving.
From the avocado and mayonase, there was a small serving of fat.

Perhaps adding some protien ( meat/tofu) and some cream cheese ( fat+dairy) would help make the sushi more nutritious.

Overall a very light lunch, perhaps adding some dairy, fruit and some trail mix/ small muffin would make the sushi a fully nutritious lunch.

Pick your essay topic from the ‘persuasive writing’ Google Page.
It can be from the slides or from the Google Doc.
Sportsmen should not get paid for playing sport.

Plan your writing either in the table below or the persuasive writing template we have been using.
(You’ll need to make a copy of this.)
Your writing needs to be on the Year 10 Persuasive Writing 2018 Google Doc in your google Drive.

5.They are playing a game which is recreational.

5) Write your essay based on the template below.
You may wish to use copy and paste this onto your Google Doc to help you plan and organise your writing.

Introduction:
Catch ‘em: Sports have been a part of lives for centuries,
perhaps millenniums,
helping us to learn and practice skills that apply to not only the games,
but our lives as a whole..
Thesis: Sports are activities which we can learn from,
be social and bring pride but sportsmen don't need paid for these activities.
List of reasons/points/ideas: Playing sports doesn't help others,
paying people for playing encourages people to use their skills which don't contribute to society,
causes unnecessary spending and inequality,
and pays certain people for participating in a recreational activity.

Body:
1 S Paying people to play sports rather than contributing to society in a positive way is a waste of time and money.
E Playing sports as a hobby is common but being paid to participate in a recreational
hobby rather than focusing your time and effort into a career or education that will help others or yourself
is not a good idea.
X Focusing all your effort into paid sports rather than using it as recreation,
and focusing on a career will almost ensure you lack skills and habits used in the real world.
The moment you get injured or become, in some way, unable to compete, you are struggling.
Well known athletes can make decent amounts of money but that takes years to achieve.
Y Encouraging younger generations that this is what you should aspire to be,
an athlete whose career could end in a second, is not a good message.

2 S Having our youth aspire to be sports players rather than something that will help others will make our
country suffer.
E If everyone who wants to be a paid sports play becomes one,
there will be deficiencies in other careers such as medical professionals, lawyers, teachers ect.
Focusing all your energy on something that will only last for a short term will leave people lacking skills.
X We need these people to work in industries that will help people, families and our society as a whole.
Aspiring to be,
and putting all your effort towards becoming a paid sportsman will leave you without skills needed for other careers.
Y Despite the deficit in other skills, paid athletes work exceptionally hard to get where they are.

3 ( rebuttal)
S Sportsmen work extremely hard to train their bodies and minds to compete to the best of their ability.
E Athletes devote their time and effort to be the best they can be, sacrificing their body and time.
They work hard to achieve their goals.
X Sportsmen train regularly for the spot, as well as conditioning their bodies to be 'match ready'.
They devote hours a week to be better than they once were, all ways improving.
Y At the end of the day, they are devoting themselves to something that will not last long,
something which normally a game. They devote themselves to a recreational activity.

4 S Despite all their efforts, sportsmen are only participating in a recreational activity and shouldn't be getting paid for it.
E Following the logic that people can be paid for recreational activities, should people be paid for shopping, walking?
Of course not, that sounds ridiculous right? Then why are people getting paid for playing games?
X Sportsmen are focusing all their effort and getting paid to win a match, not on helping others.
The top sportsmen get paid up to five million dollars every year. This is ridiculous.
Y Money is being wasted on people playing sports, not helping us in any way.

Conclusion:
Restate thesis:Sports are activities which we can learn from,
be social and bring pride but sportsmen don't need paid for these activities.
Restate List of reasons: Paying for people to play sports has no positive impact on others.
It trains people to devote their effort into something which will not help them,
causes unnecessary spending and is just paying people to play a game.

Punch line: In conclusion, paying people to participate in sports does not help society,
does not help our economy and does not help the players.
