Here I am discussing foods that I would swap in the three main meals of the day.
Breakfast
I would start off with whole meal toast rather than white because complex carbs are better for you and give you more, longer lasting energy. I would use a jam with a higher percentage of fruit than sugar. With the coffee I would add honey instead of sugar.
Lunch
sandwich, yogurt,chocolate
First I would use whole meal bread for the sandwich to get extra fibre. I would use low fat mayo, some protein and lots of greens. for the yogurt I would go with plain or berry yogurt, staying clear of vanilla and chocolate. For the chocolate I would go with at least 60%cocoa.
Dinner
Curry, rice, naan,soda
For the curry I would go with a vegetarian curry to opt out some of the saturated fat. I would have a low sugar fizzy ( such as sparkling oh). For the rice I would choose plain brown rice for more fibre and less added fat and preservatives. I would choose naan instead of roti to avoid extra oils.

Shakespeare
We are learning about an introduction to Shakespeare. This shows my learning because I have discussed the basics we need to know about Shakespeare. Next time I would lay it out neater.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an amazing woman who helped many other slaves to the path of freedom. Harriet was born around 1820 and had worked for many different masters by the age of 12. When she was a teenager a slave master threw a metal pipe at another slave, hitting her instead. She suffered extreme injury and epilepsy. She had visions, how ever she took these visions as missions from God, which she took as an inspiration to get to freedom and help others to get free.
In 1844 she married John Tubman, a free African american man. Harriet was determined to escape her life of slavery and in 1849 she finally did it. She risked her life to get from Maryland to Philadelphia by following the north star and used the 'underground railroad' to make her way to freedom. the 'underground rail road' was a collection of free African Americans, Europeans and Christians who all thought slavery was wrong and helped slaves escape to the north. When Harriet made it to the north she desperately wanted to go back and help the other slaves, including her family.
She made two back to save her brothers, her sisters and her sister's two children. When she had her third trip to get her husband she found he had already found another woman. Instead of returning with her husband, she freed more slaves. Harriet was as clever as she was brave, planning many tricks to help other slaves. In 1850 things became much more difficult for Harriet. In 1850, the 'fugitive slave act' was passed which meant that she was no longer a free woman, she was a fugitive. She continues freeing slaves but she started guiding them to Canada, where they would be truly free. From 1851 to 1857 Harriet mostly lived in St. Catherine's , Canada. She continued to make trips to Maryland twice a year to free more slaves.
Besides her work as a slave freer, she was also an advocate for woman's rights and the abashment of slavery. Her efforts made her a wanted woman with a price on her life but she was never captured. She helped slavery abolitionist John brown with his plan for a raid on 'Harper's Ferry'.
During the civil war the government asked for he to recruit spies among African American men in the south. Out in the trenches, she helped coronal James Mcgummary disrupt southern supply routs which helped the freedom of many slaves.
After the war she dedicated herself to help build schools for free men. Even though she couldn't read or write, she understood the value of education.
In her later years, she worked with her friend to support and advocate woman's suffrage.
Slave songs/ spirituals
Why did slaves sing songs? Slaves often sang songs to express their feelings about the harsh world they are living in. They also sing to keep themselves occupied whilst doing their hard labour. They were in the fields from dawn till dusk and couldn't do much other than work so singing kept their minds sane. These songs can tell stories of how they were feeling and what was on their mind.
This song talks about how they are in the fields, working hard , until the sun goes down and they can finally lie down after a days hard work, just to do it again the next day. This song has a depressing vibe and makes us feel for those in slavery. The parts where they all sing together symbolises how they are all in it together.
This song talks about slaves who pick cotton for their masters. It has an upbeat tune but the lyrics are depressing. I think it has an upbeat tune to distract the slaves from the reality of their world. This song is preformed by Bessie Brown.
I feel like many songs today have themes that relate to slavery such as ' I dreamed a dream' from les miserable. This is from a story based in the french revolution.
These songs tell us about the physical toll the work takes on the slaves as well as how the slaves are feeling about their sad world.
This is a song about the journey many slaves face on their way to freedom. The river Jordan is an example of an obstacle they must face to see a free world. This song has an up beat tune which gives us and the slaves of this narrative hope that things will get better.
This song is about signalling the time to escape.this was used as a signal for 'the time has come'. 'angels are coming to bring me home' means that they are finally going to be free.

Spirituals
Spirituals are songs that bring up the spirit and praise the Gods of those singing. They were commonly used by slaves to distract themselves and make them feel better. They were an expression of spiritual devotion and a yearn for freedom from bondage.
Here is a spiritual example.

Patterns
This week in math we have been learning about patterns. All numbers and equations have some kind of pattern. I worked with Vale, Gabriel and Manase. We worked really well together and I was asked to explain my workings to the class.
We worked out this was an indefinite pattern.

Art
Today in art we have been creating collages with the inspiration of Michael Mew. We learnt how to choose a focal point and how to use leading lines. I really enjoyed doing this and am proud of my work. I used images from magazines and my sketchbook.
Problem solving
This week in math we have been problem solving as a group. My group worked well together. I really like problem solving.we got this correct.Have a go at this problem. Comment your answer in the comments below.

Its in the kiwi dna
today in science we extracted dna from a kiwi fruit. First we mashed the kiwi fruit. we added salt and water ( salt binds to the dna which will help us later). We added dish soap and heated the liquid. We then added chilled ethenol which brings out the salt which binds to the dna.
here we are heating the kiwi/dishsoap/salt/water mixture.
Here we have the dna extracted from the rest of the kiwi cells.

Iqbal Masih
Here is the story of Iqbal Masih. This was a word problem we had to solve for social studies.
I am learning: about child labour.
This shows my learning because: i could work out the parts of the missing story.
I am proud of: how quickly i completed this.

Iqbal’s mother received a loan of 5000 rupees in Iqbal’s name from his employer,
(about $NZ200) after Iqbal had been working in a carpet factory in Pakistan for two years.
To repay the Loan Iqbal had to work up to twelve hours a day, six days a week on a carpet loam.
He was malnourished and often Beaten.
After six years of hard labour the debt had increased to 13000 rupees (NZ$518).
In 1992, when he was 10 years old, Iqbal attended a meeting of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front (BLLF).
Where, Inspired by what he heard, he gave an impassioned speech about his life.
During the Meeting he learnt about his Rights and, with the help of a BLLF lawyer,
Drafted a letter of Freedom, which he gave to the owner.
He never returned to the carpet factory
. Instead,
freedom inspired Iqbal to Campaign for the human rights of other children caught in the trap of Bonded labour.
For the next two years, he spoke out, campaigned and lobbied for an end to Bondage,
estimated to affect more than half a Million children in Pakistan alone.

The suspicious circumstances surrounding his death fits a pattern of collusion between Powerful business families,
Political groups and local police authorities, which has resulted in other threats and killings.
Despite an initial Investigation, Iqbal’s murder remains unsolved.

Chicken and rice patties.
Friday 1st of February.
What we did: We made chicken and rice patties. I worked with Tana and we worked well together. The end product was tasty and had a good texture. Next time I would add sweet chilli sauce to the mix. The chicken and rice was cooked prior to the practical. We shredded the chicken first. Next we grated the carrot and chopped the spring onion. ( I accidentally cut my self but we got through this set back). Next we grated the cheese ( this was pretty easy. The next thing to do was to beat the eggs and put all the ingredients together. We greased the muffin tins, put in the mixture and let them cook in the oven.
What i learnt: I learnt that rice can cause food poisoning if left out for more than 24 hours because of the bacteria called listeria.
We need to make sure we are working with different food on different boards to avoid food poisoning.
Bacteria doesnt like to be at a temperature over 60 degrees.
What i would work on: Next time I would add sweet chilli to the mixture.

Human rights
This term in social studies we are learning about human rights. The declaration of human rights' by the the United Nations was established in 1948 after the end of WWII. There are 30 rights which should apply to every human being on this earth. Many of them are about freedom and basic human rights.
The most interesting thing I have learnt so far is the story of Malala; an Afghani girl who fought for girls education , got shot by the Taliban and lived to fight another day.
At the moment we are reading a book about this boy named Iqbal. He is a child slave who works in a factory, escaped and helped many other children. This links back to the human rights focus because Iqbal, like so many children around the world, has had his human rights breached. I am really enjoying this topic and it has opened my eyes to what the world can be like.

This week in art we have been learning about toning. Toning is the shades and colours or an art work. This week I have been working on my toning skills and have already made progress. Learning how to draw and shade shapes will be very helpful in my future artwork. My next steps are to becoming a better artist is to understand proportions.
